Overview

Callin, a social platform for livestreaming and podcasts, faced a notable challenge with organic growth. Content creators frequently voiced a desire for video functionality, presenting an exciting opportunity. To address this, we introduced a new live streaming format, expanding the platform's focus beyond its original emphasis on audio and podcasts. This initiative held significant business potential, as no existing products in the market combined both audio and video live streaming capabilities, making Callin a pioneer in this space.

After thoughtful iterations, we’ve developed three distinct content frameworks to enhance the platform’s design and usability:

Highlights livestreams with large visuals, featuring either a short looping video or episode cover artwork to spotlight trending content.

Secondary
Displays subscriptions and episodes, seamlessly accommodating both video aspect ratios and audio show artwork for a visually cohesive presentation.

Tertiary
Uses smaller, uniform show covers for browsing additional content in a clean and organized way.

These frameworks establish a clear visual hierarchy, guiding users from featured livestreams to personalized subscriptions. By balancing visual appeal and functionality, they enhance discoverability and cater effectively to both video and audio content.

This approach highlights key content while maintaining flexibility, catering to diverse creator styles and user preferences. The adaptable layout also supports personalized content discovery, offering a smooth transition between episodes, whether audio or video. By reusing the Secondary Mix View, the design aligns with the platform’s overall framework, fostering familiarity and usability while scaling effectively for future content needs.

Outcome

We see 13% of video adoption from content creators and 19% of audience total engagement.

The intuitive video setup and user-friendly design provided a seamless, low-friction entry point.

We received positive feedback from both video and podcast creators. The updated design allows flexibility, enabling creators to seamlessly produce an audio-only episode followed by a video episode without being confined to a single content format.

User feedback highlighted that the new video feature still lacks several core functionalities, such as screen sharing and customizable camera layouts. My next step is to focus on expanding these capabilities and continuing to improve the video experience.
